DUSHANBE, August 14 (Itar-Tass) —— The Tajik army is being withdrawn from Khorog (the administrative center of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region), Defense Minister Sherali Khairullaev said making a TV address to the population of the city late in the evening. The defense minister of the republic, who heads the headquarters of governmental forces for stabilizing the military-political situation in this highland territory, believes that “military men have fulfilled their tasks in restoring law and order in the region.”
According to him, more than 200 servicemen, including units of airborne troops left the city.
Head of a special investigation group, Deputy Prosecutor General of the republic Abdukodir Mmukhamadiev gave detailed information on the investigation of an incident connected with the shooting on a passenger car on the part of governmental military men in the evening on August 10. As a result of the shooting, two passengers died and another two got injuries. According to a preliminary version, made public by representatives of the Interior Ministry of the region, fire was opened on the car after the driver ignored the command “stop” and a warning short in the air.
Troops were bought into Khorog after the murder of general of Tajik secret services Abdullo Nazarov on July 21 and the refusal of field commanders of Badakhshan to give up the supposed murders. During a one-day special operation on July 24 and the death of 47 people of both sides, the authorities sat at the table of negotiations with commanders of illegal armed formations. As a result, one of the main suspects in organizing the attempt on the general Tolib Aiembekov and his three supports voluntarily surrendered to the authorities and began cooperating with investigators.
