Former field commander of Tajik Bdakhshan surrenders to authorities

DUSHANBE, August 13 (Itar-Tass) —— One of former field commanders of Tajikistan’s Badakhshan Tolib Aembekov and his several supports, accused of being involved in the murder of general of Tajik secret services Abdullo Nazarov, surrendered to the authorities, ITAR-TASS learnt at the Interior Department of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan on Monday.

Aembekov said about his decision in an address on local television on Sunday. “I also call on other field commanders to surrender for the sake of peace and tranquility in the region,” he stressed.

The Tajik general was killed by a group of young people at the entrance to the city of Khorog in the evening on July 21. On July 24, army units were brought into the city. During a special operation, 30 militants were destroyed and 40 were taken prisoner. The losses of governmental forces, according to the official information, amounted to 17 people. On July 25, in accordance with the order of Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon, combat actions were suspended and talks between law enforcers and field commanders began.
