LONDON, August 12 (Itar-Tass) — Darya Dmitriyeva of Russia, the silver medal winner in rhythmic gymnastics at the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games, said on Saturday that all her training sessions were aimed at winning an Olympic medal.
Dmitriyev came second in individual events losing only to her compatriot Yevgeniya Kanayeva, now two-times Olympic champion.
“I feel great. It was not an easy task to win this medal. Now I am very happy. The final decision on who will go to the Olympics was made only a week ago. All my efforts and years of training were aimed at winning the right to go to the Games,” Darya Dmitriyeva went on to say.
She said she was very proud of her country which has so many people. “Great coaches, our parents…It’s all like a dream. Sometimes, I felt ill at ease but now I feel so happy!,” the athlete said.
Speaking about her teammate and Olympic champion Yevgeniya Kanayeva, Dmitriyeva said that she was one of the most impressive rhythmic gymnasts which now holds two Olympic gold medals.
“Isn’t it wonderful? She’s my close friend who trains together with me. Yevgeniya often gives me a piece of advice. Dmitriyeva said she didn’t wish that Kanayeva left sport before the next summer Olympic Games in Rio-de-Janeiro. “I would prefer that she stays,” she said.
Lubov Charkashina of Belarus was third.
