LONDON, August 11 (Itar-Tass) — President of the Russian Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov said he is satisfied with the performances of Russian athletes at the Olympic Games in London.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Zhukov said, “The day has started by pleasant news from the rowing canal where our athletes carried off gold and bronze medals. In the total terms of medals we exceeded the performances of the Olympic Games in Beijing. Two days of competitions will follow. I’m sure that our Olympic athletes will joy us.”

“We predicted that we would get 25 gold medals in London. But if we get 24 gold medals, I’m not saddened. I don’t understand those who say the Olympic Games in London can be considered a failure for us. Our gunners and our fencers failed. We expected to win based on the performances of world championships. These are the Olympic Games and the great lose. This is the sports. It is necessary to draw right conclusions and work further,” the president of the Russian Olympic Committee said.

“Russia has good prospects in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Our team is very promising and it seeks to win the victory in many sports,” Zhukov said.
