DUSHANBE, August 11 (Itar-Tass) —— One died and three people were seriously wounded when their car was fired on at a checkpoint of the government forces in Khoroga, the district centre of Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous region, a regional police department source told an Itar-Tass correspondent on Saturday.
According to the official information of the republic's law enforcement authorities, the driver in the car ignored the servicemen's order to stop and the warning shot into the air. One of the servicemen opened fire at the car. The incident occurred on Friday night. A criminal case is opened and an investigation is launched into the tragic incident, a Tajik security service official noted, adding that those guilty would be punished.
Reinforced posts were stationed in Khoroga after the government forces' special operation that took place there on July 24 to detain all involved in the murder of Tajik security service general Abdullo Nazarov. He was killed late on July 21. A moratorium on fighting has been in force there since July 25. The government troops are gradually withdrawn from the city and its suburbs. On Friday, during negotiations with informal Tajik Badakhshan leaders, two of four suspects over the assassination gave themselves up to the authorities.
In the operation, 47 people died on both sides. There were also casualties among the civilian population.
