ST. PETERSBURG, August 10 (Itar-Tass) — The situation in Russia’s northwestern republic of Karelia, where heavy rains caused floods in a number of settlements and at hydropower facilities, has stabilized, Russian Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov said on Friday.

The recent rains in the republic washed away railway beds, destroyed a dam and flooded a hydropower plant and several settlements.

The minister said that protection measures had been taken in due time. “The situation has stabilized, the electricity supplies system is being restored,” he said.

“I assess the work of crisis management authorities positively,” he added.
