Krasnoyarsk fire fighters reduce forest fire area to 1,200 ha

KRASNOYARSK, August 10 (Itar-Tass) — Fire fighters of the Krasnoyarsk Territory region have for the third day in a row been reducing the area of wildfire seats. On Thursday alone they were extinguished fires at a total fire area 1,440 hectares. However, by Friday morning as many as 31 taiga fires are still raging at the area of ··1,211 hectares, the territorial forest fire protection centre told Itar-Tass.

Most of the fires were registered in a remote northern zone of ··the region. There are a total of 26 fire seats there at an area of ··1,164 hectares. Another five fires at an area of ··47 hectares were recorded in other parts of the region. “So far one major fire at an area of 460 hectares continues there, but it may soon be extinguished. It poses no threats to populated localities,” the forest fire protection service reported.

Since April - the beginning of the fire hazard season – a total of 2,228 taiga fires occurred in the forest of the territory, and they spread at an area of more than 309 thousand hectares. In most cases, the fires were caused by irresponsibility of the local population and dry thunderstorms.
