Russian railroad workers celebrate professional holiday

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, August 5 (Itar-Tass) —— Fireworks climaxed celebrations of the day of Russian railroad workers on Sunday.

The celebrations centered on Nizhny Novgorod, the administrative center of the Volga region, this year. They started with a whistle of a retro train, which arrived to the first platform of the Nizhny Novgorod railroad terminal. A theatric performance presented the history of the opening of the Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod railroad line 150 years ago.

There were celebrations in all large cities of Russia linked with the railroad history. A new railroad terminal opened in Kazan, ahead of University Games 2013.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev congratulated railroad workers and veterans on the professional holiday.

“The history of Russian railroads started precisely 175 years ago with the opening of the first railroad line between St. Petersburg and Tsarskoye Selo. The railroad network is nationwide in modern Russia. Railroads play a key role in the development of national economy, raising of its competitiveness and strengthening of the country’s defense potential. The life of millions of citizens depends on the efficient operation of railroads,” the message runs.

“It is necessary to broaden the railroad network, to organize high-speed passenger traffic, to develop modern terminal and logistics infrastructure and to use Russia’s transit potential. It is necessary to introduce efficient managerial methods and to upgrade the training of specialists. Naturally, it is also necessary to create a comfortable and safe environment for passengers,” it said.

“Competence and responsibility of railroad workers will ensure the achievement of these tasks,” it concluded.
