KIEV, July 31 (Itar-Tass) — On the second day of the parliamentary election campaign, a number of political parties in Ukraine have formulated decisions on the lists of candidates for seats in the Verkhovna Rada, the national parliament.

Our Ukraine party, the Ukrainian People’s Party and the Congress of Ukrainian nationalists, which held a unification congress behind closed doors, endorsed a party ticket with former President Viktor Yushchenko standing at the top of it.

Yushchenko, who took the floor at the congress, expressed the conviction that the political force he is presiding over is the only one “capable of offering a really alternative national policy in Ukraine”.

He believes his party will get fifty to sixty seats in the Rada in the final run.

The People’s Party led by the incumbent Rada speaker, Vladimir Litvin, has decided to put up its candidates for the election only in the majority precincts.

At the congress that was held Tuesday, the party endorsed 69 candidacies for the precincts. Litvin himself will run in the Zhitomir region.

He told the congress participants his party’s representatives will also run as self-nominated candidates. In addition, some of them have been put on the ticket of “another party” /the Regions Party – Itar-Tass/.

The United Center party led by the former minister for emergency situations, Viktor Baloga, has taken a decision to give up the party ticket and to put up its candidates in single-mandate constituencies only.

Party leaders say this format of participation in the elections offers the best opportunities if one considers the general context of Ukraine’s political reality.

Ukrainians will go to the polls October 28. The Verkhovna Rada has 450 seats, with 225 deputies to be elected on party tickets and another 225 deputies to be elected in majority precincts.
