MOSCOW, July 22 (Itar-Tass) —— A criminal case has been opened against a woman driver who lethally hit five people, including a small child, in the Moscow region on Saturday evening, a spokesman for the regional police department told Itar-Tass on Sunday.
“The woman was drunk when the accident took place. The charges she is facing carry a punishment of up to nine years in prison,” he said.
The accident took place at about 22:00 Moscow time on Saturday near the Staraya Kupavna settlement in the Noginsk district of the Moscow region. The 24-year-old woman, a resident of the city of Moscow, driving a Land Rover at a high speed hit seven pedestrians walking in the same direction along the road to a bus stop. Five persons, including a seven-year-old girl died instantly straight on the spot.
The woman driver was detained. She confessed to have drunk alcohol before taking to wheel. She said she was forced to do so in order to take her unwedded husband to a hospital.
