Moscow sees off national team to Olympic Games in London

The national team will compete for top three in the unofficial team standing

MOSCOW, July 21 (Itar-Tass) —— Moscow hosted an official ceremony of seeing off the national team to the Summer Olympic Games in London, due in six days.

The festive ceremony began in Red Square, where athletes and officials, including Minister of Sports Vitaly Mutko, President of Russia’s Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov, laid wreaths to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

After that, the delegation went to Kremlin to participate in a meeting with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. This year’s event features over 140 participants – 100 athletes, coaches and leaders of sports federations.

During the upcoming Games, the Russian national team will participate in 34 of 37 Olympic sports. The national team includes 436 athletes – 208 men and 228 women.

Most athletes, 149 come from Moscow.

The national team will compete for top three in the unofficial team standing, Alexander Zhukov said.

The Summer Olympic Games in London are due between July 27 and August 12.
