Yakutia to host Children of Asia International Sports Games in 2016

The Games were launched in 1996 under the initiative of the first President of Yakutia Mikhail Nikolayev

VLADIVOSTOK, July 12 (Itar-Tass) — Russia’s Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) will host the Children of Asia International Sports Games in 2016, Yakutia President Yegor Borisov said at the meeting with chiefs of children’s sports teams.

The current jubilee games brought together almost 3,000 young athletes from 26 countries as well as teams from Moscow, the republics of Tatarstan, Bashkiria, Yakutia, the Ural, Siberian and Far Eastern federal districts, the press service of Yakutia’s government said.

Borisov emphasized that the Republic of Yakutia pays special attention to the development of children and youth sports and enhancement of friendly international relations.

Along with this he noted that the republic’s authorities resolve not only the tasks to hold the events for children, but also to improve Yakutsk’s image.

“It is the oldest city in Russia’s northeast that recently was fully consisted of wooden buildings, but today we want to turn it into one of the most modern cities on the territory of Asia,” he said.

The Games were launched in 1996 under the initiative of the first President of Yakutia Mikhail Nikolayev. They were devoted to the 100th anniversary of the Olympic Movement.
