NOVO-OGAREVO, July 11 (Itar-Tass) — Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that budget spending should increase if there was shortage of funds to raise salaries in the social sphere.

Putin called for stepping up social reform. He said that only organizations whose services were most useful to people should continue operating in the social sector.

“Funds released as a result of reorganization of budget institutions should be one of the sources to raise salaries to social workers,” Putin went on to say.

The president said that the funds would have to be found in the state budget if there was a shortage of means to finance social projects and increase salaries to employees.

“In that case, we’ll have to increase budget financing and revise items of expenditure accordingly,” the Russian head of state stressed.

Putin emphasized that the government and regions would be in charge of solving these tasks. “It’s up to you to decide what sources you will find to raise salaries. But that should be done,” the president stressed.
