CHOLPON-ATA, July 11 (Itar-Tass) — Kyrgyzstan will increase fees for three military bases Russia leases on the territory of the Central Asian republic, Defence Minister, Major General Taalaybek Omuraliyev told reporters on Wednesday.
“An increase in lease fees is dictated by the inflation,” he said. “The prices for property and land are growing.”
The minister noted that new tariffs will be imposed in 2014, when a new lease treaty with Russia is signed.
Under the effective agreement concluded in 2007 Russia pays 15 million roubles.
“This is not only cash money, we pay against these funds for the training of our military specialists,” Omuraliyev said.
“We agreed that beginning from 2014 we will receive payment in cash to buy military hardware for this money,” he said.
The defence minister emphasized that higher lease fees will not spread on Russia’s military airbase in Kant.
“The Kant airbase is an exception. It operates in the interests of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, i.e. in the interests of Kyrgyzstan,” he said adding that Kyrgyzstan also pays for the airbase’s communal services.
