Russian Wikipedia protests against amendments to information law

The mobile version of the online encyclopedia continues to operate as usual

MOSCOW, July 10 (Itar-Tass) — The Russian-language edition of the largest online encyclopedia Wikipedia will not work on July 10 in protest against proposed amendments to the law on information, which will have its second reading at the State Duma on Tuesday, the encyclopedia’s administration said in its message.

“These amendments can create the groundwork for real censorship in the Internet – the creation of the blacklist of banned websites and IP addresses with their further filtration,” the message read.

“The data supporting the amendments states that they are aimed exclusively against the content like child pornography and similar things. But the observance of provisions and wordings put on discussion will result in the creation of an analogue of the Great Firewall of China in Russia,” the action’s organizers said.

They believe that there is a high probability that things will develop under the worst scenario, when an access to Wikipedia can be blocked all over the country.
