Russia denies proposal to give asylum to Assad

German colleagues told about it, Russia - took it as a joke

MOSCOW, July 5 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia denied the proposals to give a political asylum to Syrian President Bashar Assad, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday.

“I believe that it is open secret that during the negotiations between Vladimir Putin and Angela Merkel German colleagues said it would be good if we provide a political asylum to Assad,” the minister noted. “We took it as a joke,” he said. “But how much we were surprised when during the recent talks with foreign partners they told us that they are convinced that we will give an asylum to him,” Lavrov underlined.
