MOSCOW, July 2 (Itar-Tass) — U.N./LAS Special Envoy Kofi Annan will make a visit to Russia in the middle of July, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told journalists on Monday.
“An invitation has been sent to Kofi Annan. I believe that Annan will visit Russia in the middle of this month,” the diplomat said.
At the same time, he made it clear that the special envoy would meet with the Russian leadership.
The diplomat said Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was likely to meet the new head of the Syrian National Council on July 10. “We’ve invited the new head of the Syrian National Council to visit Moscow. We hope that he will arrive in the Russian capital at the end of the month,” he said.
The diplomat stressed that the visit might also be made on July 10. “We hope that the agenda [of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov] will give an opportunity to meet with the SNC new head,” Bogdanov added.
“We expect the Syrian delegation to arrive in Moscow on a visit shortly, approximately on July 4-5. Head of the delegation, Michel Kilo, is currently taking part in the opposition meeting in Cairo. He lived in Paris and he is a rather authoritative political figure,” Bogdanov said.
Moscow is actively working with a group of the Syrian opposition, he stressed. “It is important in order to get full information on what is happening in Syria and in order to call on all parties involved in the conflict to take constructive approaches,” the Russian deputy foreign minister noted.
“It is important to exert maximum effort to implement the Kofi Annan Plan and the resolutions of the Geneva conference and the Action Group that are aimed at consolidating international efforts on Syria,” Bogdanov said.
In his words, “Our task is to actively work with all parties.”
