Over 12,000 people left without electricity in Kaliningrad reg

Work to restore electricity supply is to be finished by the end of the day, Gmyrin said

KALININGRAD, July 1 (Itar-Tass) — Gale-force winds in Russia’s enclave Kaliningrad region have left over 12,000 people without electricity, spokesman for the Yantarenergo electricity company Alexander Gmyrin told Tass on Sunday.

Substations and power transmission lines were damaged by gale-force winds and powerful thunderstorms hitting the Kaliningrad region early on Sunday, he said. The Guryevo, Gvardeisk and Manonovo districts were the hardest hit. About 13,500 people were left without electricity there on Sunday morning, but as repair work continues their number has decreased to some 12,000 people, Gmyrin said.

Thunderstorms and squall winds up to 20 meters per second also caused blackouts in some region’s areas on Saturday. About 4,500 people were left without electricity supply on Saturday. Repair brigades have managed to restore electricity almost fully, but the weather on Sunday has caused more blackouts.

Work to restore electricity supply is to be finished by the end of the day, Gmyrin said.
