UNESCO’s youth session kicks off in Kazan

Young researches will present reports on outstanding cultural and natural landmarks in their native countries

KAZAN, the Republic of Tatarstan, July 1 (Itar-Tass) — Delegations from 21 countries, including Russia, have gathered in Kazan to attend a youth session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. The session will open on Sunday as part of the 36th UNESCO session which’s getting under way in St.Petersburg.

“Each country has sent two young representatives – a young man and a young girl aged 20-25 who specialize in preservation of world heritage. They are students and post-graduate students of specialized institutions of high learning and young scholars. They will work at the Korston business center,” the forum’s organizing committee said.

Young researches will present reports on outstanding cultural and natural landmarks in their native countries. They will try to model the main aspects of the work of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Experts invited to the session will help the young delegates to test the methods and procedures adopted by the Committee and World Heritage Center and the Convention on Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

A TV link-up between Kazan and St. Petersburg will be organized. Live broadcasts will be held from the halls of the Tavrichesky Palace in St. Petersburg, the venue of 36th UNESCO session. The young researchers will have a chance to meet the delegates of the 36th UNESCO session who will visit Kazan on July 6.

The participants in the forum will go on a sightseeing tour of Kazan which is preparing to host the 2013 World University Games. The guest will visit the UNESCO-protected Kazan Kremlin, institutions of high learning and theatres. They will travel to the ancient settlement of Bolghar and an island town of Sviyazhsk where a large-scale program to renovate and re-build historical sites is under way.

The youth session will last until July 9.
