Annan urges international players to reach compromise on Syria

The Syrian problem should be solved by Syrians themselves, the U.N./LAS special envoy pointed out

GENEVA, June 30 (Itar-Tass) — The crisis in Syria has aggravated and international players should reach a compromise on a political transition period in Syria, U.N./LAS Special Envoy Kofi Annan said at an international meeting of the Action Group for Syria on Saturday.

The Syrian problem should be solved by Syrians themselves, he said opening an international meeting of the Action Group for Syria, June 30.

Annan said there would be no chance to influence the Syrian settlement if international players failed to bring their positions closer.

Each participant in the meeting is able to influence the settlement of the conflict, the U.N./LAS special envoy said. At the same time, he stressed that this was the Syrian internal problem, which should be, finally, solved by Syrians themselves.

Annan expressed hope for a fruitful dialogue in Geneva. “We will work jointly and we will try to reach consensus,” he said.

The results of the conference should be based on the interests of the Syrian people and not separate international players, the U.N./LAS special envoy pointed out.

The conference involves the foreign ministers of the five U.N. Security Council members – Britain, China, Russia, the U.S. and France, as well as from Turkey, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the League of Arab States Nabil Al Arabi and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton. Russia is represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
