MAKHACHKALA, June 29 (Itar-Tass) —— A mosque imam and a parishioner were shot dead in the settlement of Karamakhi in North Caucasian republic of Dagestan, a spokesman for the republican interior ministry told Itar-Tass.
According to the spokesman, the incident took place at about 23:30 Moscow time on Thursday. Several masked men broke into the mosque and opened gunfire at imam Magomedkamil Gamzatov. They then set the mosque on fire and fled a stolen car. The fire was put out by local residents.
The republican investigations committee confirmed this information. An investigation is underway.
