Ukraine, Russia PMs to discuss economic cooperation matters Wed

During the upcoming talks, the sides are expected to discuss prospects for Ukraine-Russia integrational processes in the Eurasian space

KIEV, June 27 (Itar-Tass) — Ukraine and Russia hold a session of the intergovernmental committee on economic cooperation here on Wednesday. "The session will be attended by Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolai Azarov and Russian Head of Government Dmitry Medvedev," Ukrainian Premier's press secretary Vitaly Lukyanenko told journalists.

Prior to the session, Dmitry Medvedev is to meet with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich.

Azarov told journalists on Tuesday that the sides would discuss a very broad spectrum of matters, with a further cooperation in the gas sector being one of the main subjects of discussion at the talks. The Premier said Ukraine has no grievances against Russia in connection wth the disadvantageous-to-Ukraine gas contracts signed by the government of Yulia Timoshenko. At the same time he once again recalled a desire to reconsider the price of Russian gas supplied to Ukraine with a view to lowering it.

In this connection, Azarov expresssed hope for Moscow's understanding of the fact that the present price of gas "drives Ukraine into the corner".

The government of Ukraine already stated that it was preparing in earnest for the Committee's session during which it intends to present its vision "of the largest-scale bilateral cooperation projects" which include the establishment of a co-production of An-70 military transportation plane.

During the upcoming talks, the sides are expected to discuss prospects for Ukraine-Russia integrational processes in the Eurasian space. Experts do not rule it out that the matters concerning the Customs Union (CU) will be also touched upon. Viktor Yanukovich earlier confirmed that Ukraine attentively follows the CU functioning and does not rule the country's participation in it in a 3+1 format in future.

It is supposed that the sides will also fix a treaty on the Kerch Strait. Acording to diplomatic sources, an agreement on joint use of the Strait may become a compromise arrangement, with Ukrainian and Russia ships gaining the right to pass through the channel freely while foreign ships would be able to get into the Sea of Azov from the Black Sea only with the consent of both the Ukrainian and Russian sides.
