German films program launched at Moscow Int’l Film Festival

The audience will have a chance to discuss films with cinema critics after each show

MOSCOW, June 25 (Itar-Tass) — A program of German films has been launched at the 34th Moscow International Film Festival which’s currently under way in Moscow. The viewers will be able to see both classics and new German films. The program will be the first cinematographic event within the framework of the Year of German culture in Russia.

The program’s curator Maria Toropygina spoke about the selection of films for the festival.

“We divided a hundred-year-old history of German cinema into decades and suggested that leading Russian cinema critics should present the most interesting films from each period to the audiences,” Toropygina said.

Movie critic Anton Dolin chose a film “M: A City Searchers for a Murderer” directed by Fritz Lang in the 1930s. The film is the best example of the era of German expressionism, of which Lang is certainly a star.

Film reviewer Andrei Shemyakin chose a film from the 1970s. He said that ‘Germany in Autumn’ was an unprecedented example of German documentary and feature films in which influential German film directors presented an intellectual landscape of their country in 1978.

Two German films ran on Monday: ‘We, Miracle Children’ directed by Kurt Hoffmann which already won the Gold medal at the Moscow International Film Festival in 1959. The film tells about events in Nazi Germany; and the 1940 film ‘Jew Suss’, an anti-Semitic propaganda film which in Germany is allowed to be shown only with a special commentary.

“Odious cultural events shouldn’t be hushed. They should be analyzed and put to an open discussion,” Kirill Razlogov, a program director of the Moscow International Film Festival, said, explaining his choice.

The audience will have a chance to discuss films with cinema critics after each show.

Films from various programs: three contest films, animated cartoons, short films and Russian films ran on the fourth day of the Moscow International Film Festival from morning till night.
