TEL AVIV, June 25 (Itar-Tass) — Presidents of Israel and Russia, Shimon Peres and Vladimir Putin, have opened a memorial in the town of Netanya to pay tribute to the Red Army victory over Nazi Germany.

An initiative to this effect was put forth by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his visit to Moscow in 2010 and backed by the Russian leadership. The Israeli prime minister himself could not take part in the ceremony due to the rupture of the tibio-tarsic joints.

The ceremony involved veterans who had immigrated to Israel later.

The monument was erected in the central part of the city, on the seacoast near the memorial to the dead in the Israeli-Arab wars. A national memorial park is being set up on this site.
