ST. PETERSBURG, June 24 (Itar-Tass) —— The school graduation ball titled Alye Parusa (Scarlet Sails) is being held on the Palace Square here overnight to Sunday. Despite a heavy rain, hundreds of young people, their teachers and parents, residents and guests of the city came for a romantic evening.

In a welcome speech to the school graduates Russian Minister of Education and Science Dmitry Livanov wished to them “to be afraid of nothing and believe in their forces.” “Home tasks, lessons and exams are behind, the student life, career, new friends and a broad path in the life is in the future,” he noted.

St. Petersburg Governor Georgy Poltavchenko congratulated the school graduates on behalf of the whole city and noted that “to be born and study in St. Petersburg is a good springboard in the future, and the scarlet sails of your hopes are blown by fresh Neva winds today.” Speaker of the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly Vyacheslav Makarov reminded of the weather wise that the rain before the road predicts happiness.

Until dawn famous performers will entertain the school graduates. The highlight of the concert will be a romantic love story between Assol and Grey after Alexander Grin’s novel Scarlet Sails. A direct video bridge is also scheduled with the school graduates walking on the Red Square in Moscow.

The traditional highlight of the holiday will be a laser and fire show on the bank of the Neva River, where a brigantine with scarlet sails will set out as the main symbol of dreams and hopes. The school graduates will recall about their school years with their friends and will walk on the streets of St. Petersburg.

The first holiday Scarlet Sails was held in the city on the Neva River in 1967 and was revived after an interval of ten years in 2005. The celebrations of the school graduates are a visit card of St. Petersburg.

Some 1,500 policemen ensure public order in the city.
