Theatrical Olympus festival of repertoire theatres opens in Sochi

The festival’s main program includes plays that have won highest state awards

SOCHI, June 23 (Itar-Tass) — William Shakespeare’s classical tragedy Richard III staged by the Orenburg State Drama Theatres will open the second federal Theatrical Olympus festival in the Black Sea town of Sochi on Saturday. More than 400 actors from seven Russian regions will take part in the theatrical contest of repertoire theatres this year.

The festival’s main program includes plays that have won highest state awards or prestigious national and international prizes and were in public spotlight during the past theatrical season.

“Theatrical Olympus is a test for business and creative worthiness. Unlike other theatrical festivals, the jury will use two criteria to judge the theatre productions: artistic content and theatrical management,” the festival’s producer Olga Senatorova told Itar-Tass on Saturday.

According to Senatorova, the plays selected for the festival have already become trademarks not only for the theatres and actors but also for the regions which they are representing.
