PYONGYANG, June 23 (Itar-Tass) — Several North Korean families have received keys for their new housing erected in a new modern residential neighborhood in the centre of the North Korean capital. The multi-storied high risers (from 20 to 45 floors) have replaced the old five-storied buildings built in the 1970. The construction started last May under one of the most impressive projects devoted to the centenary anniversary of the birth of North Korean leader Kim IL-sung.
The North Korean media praises soldiers of the Korean People’s Army who laid bricks and mixed concrete for the new apartment buildings.
Specialized state institutions and students of Pyongyang institutions of high learning helped the military builders. The neighborhood’s concept implies a common architectural style for all apartment blocks and a well-thought infrastructure, which has everything for convenient and comfortable life. The residential complex covers an area of 30 hectares. It has a People’s Theatre for 3,000 seats, household service centers, a canteen, a restaurant, a drugstore, day nurseries, kindergartens and a school with a swimming pool. A park has been laid out around the high-risers.
North Korean Prime Minister Choe Yong-rim thanked the builders for their work. He called for turning Pyongyang into a modern beautiful world class city.
Kim IL-sung used to say that every North Korean family would get 130-square-meter apartment with all modern conveniences after a strong and prosperous state is created in North Korea. He worked out an architectural plan of building 100,000 modern apartments in Pyongyang by the end of 2012. He believed that would prove the effectiveness of the policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea aimed at raising people’s living standards.
