Russia, Japan agree to constructive dialog on peace treaty

The question of the peace treaty “was expected to be raised at the negotiations with the Japanese side”

MOSCOW, June 22 (Itar-Tass) — Russia and Japan agreed to a constructive dialog on the peace treaty, devoid of harsh statements, Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov said on Friday. He referred to the meeting of President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda held in Mexico on June 18.

“There is an agreement that the two foreign ministries will continue consultations,” he said, noting that the question of the peace treaty “was expected to be raised at the negotiations with the Japanese side.”

“There is a mutual understanding that the further dialog on this sensitive subject must be calm and constructive and attempts to influence the discussion with public and frequently emotional statements should be avoided,” he said.

“Noda proposed to carry on discussions of experts, and Vladimir Vladimirovich ordered the Russian Foreign Ministry to continue the political dialog,” Ushakov said.
