Lavrov calls ‘politically unrealistic’ US comment on al-Asad future

“Only the people of Syria have the right to decide on the future of the Syrian leaders,” he told

MOSCOW, June 22 (Itar-Tass) — Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called ‘politically unrealistic’ U.S. statements concerning the future of Syrian President Bashar al-Asad.

“Only the people of Syria have the right to decide on the future of the Syrian leaders,” he told Rossiya 24 on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum. “Probably, there should be free and fair elections. Our American colleagues say that the Syrian people must decide on the future of President Al-Asad upon his retirement. I was surprised and could not believe my eyes. If they say that al-Asad must step down and be put to rough justice, that statement cannot be serious. It is absolutely politically unrealistic even if we disregard the moral aspect of the problem.”
