KIEV, June 22 (Itar-Tass) — The European Court of Human Rights will begin on August 28 the consideration of the appeal of Ukraine’s former Prime Minister and leader of the Batkivshchina party Yulia Timoshenko challenging her arrest, Timoshenko’s lawyer Sergei Vlasenko said on Friday.

“The motion will be considered on August 28,” he said. In his words, the court procedure is “rather brief” and will take one day. After that, the court will have some time to pass a decision.

On October 11, Kiev’s Pechersky district court sentenced the former prime minister to seven years in prison for acting in excess of office duties while signing gas agreements with Russia in January 2009. The ruling was challenged by Timoshenko’s defence, whereas Timoshenko was taken to the Kachanovskaya penitentiary in Kharkov in late December 2011. Since May 9, she has been receiving health treatment at a Kharkov-based hospital.
