St. Petersburg might name street after Soviet singer Eduard Khil

The name of Eduard Khil is connected with an entire epoch in Russia' music history

St.PETERSBURG, June 20 (Itar-Tass) — Deputies of the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly have suggested giving the name of Soviet singer Eduard Khil to one of the streets in St. Petersburg which was the singer's home city.

On Wednesday the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly has forwarded a document to this effect to Governor Georgy Poltavchenko for approval. The singer best know in the world as "Mr.Trololo", died in St.Petersburg on June 4.

The name of Eduard Khil is connected with an entire epoch in Russia' music history. Eduard Khil by right enjoyed the title of a symbol of St. Petersburg. Most of the singer's repertoire dates back to the WWII epoch; it's logical that these songs are particular loved in the city which survived a horrible war blockade.

Yabloko deputy Grigory Yavlinsky from the St. Petersburg legislature said that the document asking to name a city street after Eduard Khil was prepared following numerous requests from the city population, prominent persons and artistic organizations. The St. Petersburg deputies also intend to immortalize the popular singer, naming either an educational or a cultural institution in his honor and instituting the Eduard Khil award in singing art.
