Ulyanovsk region minister caught taking bribe

The official was detained together with his suspected accomplice as he was taking part of the bribe he demanded, in the amount of 60,000 roubles

ULYANOVSK, June 19 (Itar-Tass) — Police in the Ulyanovsk region detained construction minister Mikhail Shkanov as he was taking a bribe, the regional department of the Investigative Committee /SK/ told Itar-Tass on Tuesday.

The official was detained together with his suspected accomplice as he was taking part of the bribe he demanded, in the amount of 60,000 roubles. The criminal case against the suspects was opened under Article 290 of Russia's penal code /"taking and extorting a bribe by a group"/.

The investigators said the suspects had taken bribes from business persons who had applied for subsidies from the regional budget within the program to develop small and medium businesses in the Ulyanovsk region, in the period from 2011 through June 2012.

Police began to watch the suspects after the injured parties reported extortion.

A court is decided on the measure of restraint for the detainees.
