Russian Football Union chief should resign – public opinion poll

Sergei Fursenko said on June 17 he was ready for pressure that will hit him personally and the national team after their return to Russia

MOSCOW, June 18 (Itar-Tass) — The president of the Russian Football Union, Sergei Fursenko, should resign, according to the public opinion poll conducted by the Echo of Moscow radio station on Monday.

According to the survey, 94.7 percent of radio listeners believe that Fursenko should bear responsibility for the national football team’s defeat at Euro 2012 that Poland and Ukraine are co-hosting and for the state of Russian football in general.

A mere 2.7 percent of the respondents said the head of the Russian Football Union should retain his position. Another 2.7 percent of those polled found it difficult to answer “whether Fursenko should leave his post?”

Sergei Fursenko in turn said on June 17 he was ready for pressure that will hit him personally and the national team after their return to Russia.

“I am aware of this. How will I cope with this? Keeping silence and setting my teeth,” he said.

On Saturday Greece beat Russia 1-0 to earn quarterfinal spot in a third round match in Group A.
