MOSCOW, June 16 (Itar-Tass) —— Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree appointing Yevgeny Savchenko to the post of acting governor of the Belgorod Region, the Kremlin press service reported on Saturday.

Actually, Savchenko leads the region about 20 years. In October 1993, he became the acting head of the administration of the Belgorod Region, since December 18, 1993 - - the head of the region’s administration, on December 17, 1995, he was again elected governor of the Belgorod Region. Since May 1999 - - the governor of the Belgorod Region, on May 25, 2003, Savchenko was reelected governor of the Belgorod Region. On June 16, 2007, his candidature, according to the Russian president’s proposal, was approved by the Duma of the Belgorod Region.

Since July 1999 - - the chairman of the government of the Belgorod Region.

From 1996 to 2001, Savchenko was a member of the Federation Council, headed the agrarian politics committee.

Yevgeny Savchenko’s powers expire in June 2012.

The law on direct elections of governors came into effect in Russia as of June 1.
