KRASNOYARSK, June 13 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia’s largest metallurgical holding, Norilsk Nickel, has invested 90 billion rubles in environmental projects, the holding told Itar-Tass.
Last year alone the holding assigned more than 17 billion rubles for environmental programs, and the total sum of environmental investments since 2004 is nearing 100 billion rubles, it said.
Modernization and capital repairs of cleaning facilities reduced the discharge of solid pollutants into the Norilsk atmosphere by 450 tonnes. The Norilsk Nickel Group cut the waste by 11.2% or 5.16 million tonnes last year. More than 90% of waste of Norilsk Nickel facilities belongs to the fifth risk category – it is practically inert and does not endanger the environment.
The company is working on the rational use of water resources, as well. The taking of water from reservoirs reduced by 26.2 million cubic meters or 10.4%, while the taking of water from underground sources was cut by 0.96 million cubic meters (3.2%). The holding’s consumption of water reduced by 81 million cubic meters or 5.7%.
