MOSCOW, June 10 (Itar-Tass) —— One of the gunmen destroyed in Baksan was identified as member of an extremist group. As a representative of the centre of the National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC) told ITAR-TASS on Sunday, “one was preliminary identified as Sokurov Eduard, 24, a member of a religious-extremist grouping operating on the territory of the Baksan region, who wounding policemen, tried to hide on the territory of a kindergarten in Lenin Street and was destroyed as a result of an armed clash.” A pistol and a submachine-gun of foreign make, two grenades and extremist literature were found on him.

“Another bandit threw several grenades in the direction of law enforcers, made an attempt to break through the cordoning and was neutralized. While examining his body, a pistol and grenades were found on him. At present, his identity is being established.

An active operation to search for and detain members of the bandit underground continued overnight from June 9 to 10, two gunmen were neutralized in Baksan’s northern outskirts.

During the armed clash, three policemen got injuries, there are no victims among civilians.

The decision to introduce the counter-terrorist operation regime in Baksan on June 10 was made by the operational headquarters of the National Antiterrorist Committee after an attack on an officer of the Russian FSB Department for Kabardino-Balkaria, as a result of which the officer was gravely injured and died in hospital.

At present, the operation to search for and detain bandits is going on. An investigation group is working at the site of the incident.
