Bashar al-Assad cannot stay on as president of Syria, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said upon completion of the brief visit to Azerbaijan

BAKU, June 7 (Itar-Tass) — Bashar al-Assad cannot stay on as president of Syria, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said upon completion of the brief visit to Azerbaijan on Wednesday, June 6.

Speaking at a press conference, Clinton said it is time to rivet more attention to this problem in order to hand over power in Syria to a democratic government.

The U.S. Secretary of State urged Russia and China to facilitate the termination of the bloodshed in Syria and help the international community hand over power in Syria by peaceful means.

Clinton stressed that sanctions against Syria would be continued. She said the Friends of Syria Group gathered in Washington to discuss ways to extend sanctions and other measures taken to put pressure on the al-Assad regime.

The U.S. Secretary of State noted that she would discuss this issue with U.N./LAS Special Representative Kofi Annan on Friday, June 8.

This issue will be discussed during the visit in Istanbul where Clinton will leave from Baku.
