Putin confirms legality of gas contracts Timoshenko signed with Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed the legality of the gas contracts that Ukraine’s former prime minister

PARIS, May 31 (Itar-Tass) —— Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed the legality of the gas contracts that Ukraine’s former prime minister, Yulia Timoshenko signed with Russia while in office. He also confirmed the invitation to bring her to Russia for treatment.

Asked about Russia’s attitude to the Timoshenko affair at a joint news conference with Francois Hollande on Friday, Putin recalled that Timoshenko had been convicted of signing gas contracts with Russia.

“Our lawyers have closely studied them from the standpoint of international law. We never sign contracts that run counter to the internal laws of our counter-agents,” Putin said.

“We have already suggested bringing Timoshenko to Moscow for treatment,” he said. Asked about calls for boycotting the European soccer cup finals in Ukraine, Putin said he regarded it as unnecessary.

“It is wrong to mix sports and politics. Besides, this runs counter to the principles of the Olympic movement,” he recalled.
