BERLIN, June 1 (Itar-Tass) —— Everything must be done to prevent a civil war in Syria, German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday after negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

She said they had emphasized the importance of the political solution. “The Annan plan may be a starting point, but it is also necessary to take insistent efforts at the UN Security Council to ensure the fulfillment of this plan,” she said.

Merkel also said they agreed with Russia about the terrible humanitarian situation in Syria. “No one wants a civil war in the SAR, and everything must be done to avoid it,” she concluded.

“We stake on a political decision, so it is important to discuss interaction at the UN so that the Annan plan does not lead to chaos,” Merkel said. She admitted that Germany and Russia had different opinions of certain aspects of the Syrian situation.
