MOSCOW, May 31 (Itar-Tass) — In case of a foreign armed intervention Syria will be fighting as long as it can and at any cost, Syria’s ambassador in Moscow, Riyad Haddad, told Itar-Tass in an interview on Thursday.
“We shall not surrender,” he said.
The diplomat recalled that President Bashar Assad was a democratically elected leader.
“The head of state enjoys great support inside Syria. Elections alone can determine whether he should stay in office or not,” Haddad said. “It is up to the Syrian people to decide.”
“What will happen if politicians will begin to step down at the wish of the West or Turkey?” the Syrian ambassador asked. “Do Western countries have the right to meddle in the affairs of independent states? They don’t.”
