RF may keep leadership in world nuclear energy market

Russia is the world leader not only in construction of new nuclear energy blocks abroad, but also in production and supplies to the international market of nuclear fuel

MOSCOW, May 31 (Itar-Tass) —— Russia has good chances to keep its leadership in the international market of nuclear energy, Deputy Director General of Rosatom state corporation Kirill Komarov said on Thursday.

“Russia is the world leader not only in construction of new nuclear energy blocks abroad, but also in production and supplies to the international market of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants,” he said during the parliamentary hearings on “Russia’s interests in international energy: participation of Russian companies in international energy projects /from export of raw materials to export of innovations, ideas and technologies/.”

The hearings featured representatives of Russia’s energy, oil and gas companies, Rosatom, scientists of leading research institutes, who study future of Russian and foreign market of energy resources.

Despite of the accident at the Fukushima power plant, there are plans to build 350 new nuclear power plants worldwide, where 120 are to be built in the markets, to which Rosatom has access.

“Rosatom has been working actively on drafting agreements on construction of 41 energy blocks, and we have started negotiating another 40,” Komarov said. Besides, construction of 21 blocks is in the corporation’s portfolio – they will be built in South-Eastern Asia, in the Middle East, in South Africa, Latin America and in Eastern Europe.”

“It is confirmed that if compared with blocks produced in other countries, Russian modern nuclear blocks have undisputable security advantages,” he continued.

“These security advantages comply with requirements of some of the countries, which would like to develop or start developing nuclear energy technologies,” Komarov said.

The State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom incorporates more than 250 enterprises and scientific research institutions, including all civil nuclear companies of Russia, nuclear weapons complex’ facilities, research organisations and the world’s only nuclear-propelled fleet. Rosatom is the largest utility in Russia which produces more than 40 percent of electricity in the country’s European part. Rosatom holds leading positions in the world market of nuclear technologies being the 1-st in the world simultaneous nuclear build abroad; 2-nd in uranium reserves and 5-th in uranium mining; 4-th in nuclear electricity generation, while providing 40 percent of the world's uranium enrichment services and 17percent of the world's nuclear fuel market.
