MOSCOW, May 29 (Itar-Tass) — Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed the need for objective and unbiased investigation of the Houla tragedy in Syria in a telephone conversation with UN/LAS Special Envoy Kofi Annan, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

He expressed profound concern over the Houla tragedy and stressed that “all parties to the Syrian conflict must stop violence immediately and prevent similar incidents in the future.”

“So far it is necessary to hold an objective and unbiased investigation of the incident circumstances under the aegis of the UN Observation Mission in Syria,” the ministry quoted Lavrov.

“The fulfillment of the Kofi Annan plan becomes an even more topical task under these circumstances,” he said. “Therefore, we stressed the need for intensifying contacts with the Syrian sides, including the opposition. It was emphasized that the external parties should encourage the Syrians to begin the political dialog of full value.”

Annan confirmed his intention to continue the work and thanked Russia for its unwavering support to his efforts, the ministry said.
