MOSCOW, May 29 (Itar-Tass) — The Kremlin has advised US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul to be more diplomatic.
“Ambassadors should be diplomatic,” RF presidential aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters when asked to comment on McFaul’s sharp statements. However, he admitted: “I ·· myself served as ambassador to the United States for almost 10 years and I would not want to comment on the colleague’s words.”
Nevertheless, Ushakov said that he “followed (during his work on the ambassador’s post) the fairly simple principle - defending the interests of their country, the ambassadors should work according to positive principles.” He added that “all ambassadors follow” this principle. The Kremlin official explained that “anyway, besides ambassadors there are many figures who are trying to spoil the atmosphere of bilateral relations.”
“The leadership of the two countries is committed to the most constructive interaction. Ambassadors should act in the same spirit, the ambassadors should not introduce dissonance into the work of their leadership,” Ushakov said.
“I tried (commenting on McFaul’s statements) to be diplomatic, and he also should be diplomatic. This will help him,” said the Russian presidential aide.
