MOSCOW, May 28 (Itar-Tass) — Opposition groups have filed applications to hold rallies in Moscow’s centre on June 12.
The so-called March of Millions will stroll through Tverskaya Zastava Square to Tverskaya Street and Borovitskaya Square, where opposition members plan to gather around 50,000 for their rally.
The event is organized by Left Front leader Sergei Udaltsov, anti-corruption campaigner and top blogger Alexei Navalny, former world chess champion and opposition figure Garry Kasparov and a member of the Russian Public Chamber, Yelena Lukyanova.
Public figures and activists from the opposition movement League of Voters also filed an application to hold a rally in a park near the Andrei Sakharov Museum and Public Center.
“The rally’s goal is to launch a large-scale discussion on holding a referendum on Muscovites’ attitude to the Moscow city authorities,” one of the rally’s initiators, Sergey Parkhomenko, told Itar-Tass.
The rally is expected to gather 10,000 people.
“Moscow’s law on referendum does not allow to directly demand the early elections of the Moscow city Duma and Moscow mayor, but at the upcoming event we want to discuss the wording of a question on the need for early termination of powers by the Moscow city Duma and Moscow mayor over the Russian capital’s southward extension and change in the number of voters,” he said.
Parkhomenko noted that two events would not compete with each other.
“Our rally will end one hour ahead of the March of Millions and all those who want may join that rally,” he said.
“The rally near the Andrei Sakharov Museum will start the League of Voters’ campaign in support of regional and local referendums all over Russia,” Parkhomenko said.
