ULAN UDE, May 28 (Itar-Tass) — A direct air service has linked the Republic of Buryatia and Vietnam. A Boeing-767-300 airliner of the Nord Wind air company on Monday began charter flights along Ulan Ude - Cam Ranh route. In June the same air carrier will start Ulan Ude-Antalya (Turkey) flights. Somewhat earlier, the air company launched Ulan Ude - Bangkok (Thailand) flights.
An official at the Buryatia Ministry of Transport has told Itar-Tass, "The republic's air transportation to foreign health resorts that are popular with the people of Russia has become possible due to cardinal changes that have come about at the Baikal international airport (Ulan Ude). This made it possible to inaugurate regular international flights from Ulan Ude to Mongolia and the People's Republic of China (Manchuria). Flighs to Beijing will begin in June. It is planned subsequently to launch flights from Buryatia to Seoul and Tokyo".
In 2012, under the Federal purpose-oriented programme "The State Border of the Russian Federation", 250 million roubles have been allocated for the accommmodations and equipment of the Baikal airport's international checkpoint. Alexander Lentsov, general director of the airport, said, "Last year the air harbour of the capital of Buryatia catered for 187,000 passengers. This year, it passenger trafffic is expected to grow up to 250,000". The Metropol Company, which runs the airport, is aiming to augment passenger traffic up to 500,000 by 2015. The Baikal airport is intended to become the key transportation hub of the "Baikal Harbour" tourist zone which is being established on the eastern shore of Lake Baikal with an eye to an annual arrival of not less than 1.8 million tourisrs , as well as a new "transportation gate" from Asian countries and Russia.
Within a year, 240 million roubles of investments have been asssigned for the airport development. By 2014, investmtents will amount to over 1,000 million roubles. The possibility is being explored for establishing a special econoic zone of port type at Baikal airport.
