Neverov elected secretary of UR General Council

Sergei Neverov has been elected secretary of the General Council of the United Russia party

MOSCOW, May 26 (Itar-Tass) — Sergei Neverov has been elected secretary of the General Council of the United Russia party.

A decision to this effect was taken by delegates of the 13th congress of the party on Saturday.

The elections were held on an alternative basis for the first time by secret ballot. This will envisages making amendments to the United Russia Regulations. The amendments are aimed at serious democratization of the internal party life.

The ballot includes three persons: Neverov, who has taken this position till now (he was secretary of the General Council Presidium in the previous version of the Regulations), his first deputy Sergei Zhelezhnyak and secretary of the Vladimir Region Political Council Sergei Borodin. The latest was nominated by secretaries of regional branches.

“Three nominees are absolutely normal. There is a choice,” the party’s new leader, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, said. In compliance with the Regulations, the chairman of the party has powers to hold sessions of the General Council. Medvedev, who has taken an active part in the congress, benefited this right.

A total of 109 members of the General Council voted for Neverov’s candidature while 15 members voted for Zheleznyak and Borodin was supported by 11 members.

A total of 136 members of the General Council out of 170 persons took part in the voting. One ballot was recognized invalid.
