MOSCOW, May 26 (Itar-Tass) — President Vladimir Putin confirmed his proposal to United Russia members to back the candidacy of Dmitry Medvedev to the post of chairman of the United Russia Party at the party congress that just opened in Moscow on Saturday.
The head of state noted that the post of the Russian president is not for any party member, which permits him to remain unbiased to all political forces in Russia. At the same time, the practice is wide-spread in the world when cabinet chairman relies on the parliamentary majority.
“Therefore, I believe it is right that Dmitry Medvedev should be at the head of the United Russia Party,” Putin said on Saturday, speaking at the 13th congress of the United Russia Party.
The president also called for debating on Saturday questions, directly dealing with the future of the party and the entire country. “We are ready to tackle new, more complicated and more large-scale tasks,” he claimed.
“We have formed the rock-firm political and economic basis for further changes,” Putin noted, adding that not only the party, but also all its supporters made an important contribution to this cause. He stated that the party joined the difficult work to overcome the crisis.
“We have preserved the course for sovereign and gradual development of the state and formed a broad popular coalition; that was the main result at the past elections,” he said with conviction.
