25/5 Tass 129
MOSCOW, May 25 (Itar-Tass) —— One hundred and twenty boxes of ammunition exploded in the Ashuluk firing range, the Astrakhan Region, on Thursday, the head of the Western Military District's press service, Col. Andrei Bobrun, told Itar-Tass on Friday.
A fire broke out on the utilization ground at 12:10 on May 24, and 120 boxes of rounds for hand anti-tank grenade launchers, which were subject to utilization, exploded at the site. The personnel were evacuated. Nobody was hurt, the officer said.
There is no threat to residential areas. A specially formed commission of the military district is investigating the incident.
It is the second such incident over the past week. On May 18, a fire broke out at an artillery ammunition depot in the Primorye Territory. The fire caused ammunition explosions. One serviceman was injured. About 1,800 people were evacuated from the four nearby settlements. The fire was extinguished the next day.
