NIZHNY NOVGOROD, May 24 (Itar-Tass) — A Nizhny Novgorod court on Wednesday found three police officers guilty of exceeding their authority, taking bribes and using violence on detainees, and sentenced them to 2.5 to 7 years, an official at the regional department of the Investigative Committee /SK/ told Itar-Tass.

The court ascertained that in January 2011, police rounded up several drug traffickers seizing from them parcels with narcotics. The detainees gave a 32,500-rouble bribe to the police to set them free, and no record of criminal offense was filed.

On the same evening, the police planted the confiscated drugs on innocent citizens, and, threatening criminal prosecution, forced them into confession that they had kept drugs. One of those citizens was beaten up by a policeman.

One policeman was sentenced to seven years in a maximum security penal colony, and his two colleagues - to 4 years and 2.5 years in a general regime penitentiary, respectively.

Another defendant in the case was given a suspended sentenced. He had signed a plea bargain agreement and his criminal case was reviewed separately.
