Serbian president to attend United Russia party congress in Moscow

He told Itar-Tass earlier that “relations between Serbia and Russia will improve” if he were elected president

BELGRADE, May 23 (Itar-Tass) — Serbia’s President-elect Tomislav Nikolic will attend the upcoming congress of the ruling United Russia party in Moscow on May 25-26.

“The trip was planned before Nikolic’s victory” at the May 20 election and will be his first foreign visit as the future head of state, his aide told journalists on condition of anonymity on Wednesday, May 23.

Nikolic will go to Moscow as the leader of the Serbian Progressive Party because the date of his inauguration is not clear yet.

The agreement on cooperation between United Russia and the Serbian Progressive Party was signed in 2010.

Immediately after his victory in the presidential election, Nikolic said in a live television broadcast that he intended to attend a congress of the United Russia party in Moscow.

He told Itar-Tass earlier that “relations between Serbia and Russia will improve” if he were elected president.
